Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People buying these medications should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
