The Gunners' boss remains confident that his team can persist in handling with fitness issues after revealing that forward Kai Havertz remains out for a few more weeks.
Prolonged Recovery for Havertz
The German forward has been sidelined since August due to an operation on his knee. Initially expected to be available earlier in December, Arteta explained the player faced a hurdle when advancing his recovery and could not progress “the required stage.”
“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a team that is far more dependable and has greater depth,” Arteta said.
Tactical Decisions for Brentford Clash
This update presents a dilemma for the midweek match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who got a goal playing out of position on Sunday, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue off the bench. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is an option post-recovery.
Defensive Concerns Linger
Further fitness issues surround defender William Saliba and attacker Leandro Trossard, who were absent for the weekend encounter. As a result, new recruits Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to start again in the heart of the defence for the Premier League front-runners.
Arteta feels the substantial investment on new players ahead of this season has placed the club in a far better place to handle such absences.
Greater Options Vital for Premier League Pursuit
Questioned if increased squad depth was helping their title quest, the manager agreed. “Yes, because this season has been worse in certain positions, and now the situation with the backline,” he continued.
“Our previous experiences taught us that we have to use players in alternative spots, and they have to be able to adapt to new tasks if we want to compete at the top. And the instance of Mikel is just the best one.”
Arteta's Support for Suffering Star
Speaking about the complication previously mentioned by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave more insight. “He was doing everything. He was unable to progress to the subsequent stage and now it’s looking like we have overcome that hurdle.”
Arteta expressed his eagerness to have him back. “The team is keen to have him. Honestly, Havertz is someone that, in my view, I value highly for the qualities he offers to the team, but his personality, his personality. I observe his frustration while sidelined.”
“His availability record is outstanding, he's usually fit, and I can’t wait to have him back involved and playing because I believe it’s going to be a significant uplift.”
