A minimum of 13 passengers killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and management of these strategic undertakings.
